IMPACT '08 NEVADA: BUILDING A BETTER, SAFER WORLD
Several months ago the Nevada Committee on Foreign Relations (NCFR) was contacted by the Center for U.S. Global Engagement in Washington, D.C. ( www.usglobalengagement.org ) to act as its principal partner in the Center's national program entitled "Impact '08: Building a Better, Safer World." Impact '08 events were held in the states with early Presidential primary elections and caucuses including Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. The Nevada Impact '08 event was a luncheon in Las Vegas on the top floor of the World Market Center, the third partner with the Center and NCFR, on January 9, 2008, when a diverse group of some 350 Nevadans participated.
The Impact '08 programs called upon all of the 2008 presidential candidates to elevate and strengthen non-military tools of global engagement, including development and diplomacy, to build a better, safer, and more prosperous Nevada, America and world. The Impact '08 events were supported by generous funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
At the Las Vegas event, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki (R-NV), Congresswoman Shelley Berkley (D-NV), and Bill Weidner, President/COO of Las Vegas Sands Corp., addressed the group in attendance, and the keynote speaker was former Governor and U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge (R-PA). A panel discussion also took place with moderator Andrea Koppel and former Governor and U.S. Senator Richard Bryan (D-NV) and Sandra Taylor, Sr. Vice President of Starbucks Coffee Company, where she oversees the company's global partnerships in corporate social responsibility. NCFR's leaders who headed up the effort to make the Impact '08 Nevada event the success that it was were President Gayle Anderson, Vice President Michael Nasiak, and President/Chairman Emeritus Patrick Clary.
With our nation's security and our economy at stake, the next President must not only strengthen our military capabilities but also our non-military capacity to address global political, economic, and humanitarian challenges. Governor Ridge
Investing in a more secure, prosperous world through foreign assistance means a better, safer Nevada. Senator Bryan
As part of a global society, Nevadans believe America can and should play a leadership role in helping promote economic development and advancement. Assisting developing countries in ways that focus on improving humankind, economics and security will positively impact future generations in impoverished countries that need our help. Lt. Governor Krolicki
Having worked hard to help disseminate broad information on international issues to Nevadans hungry for such information for the six years that NCFR has been in existence, it has warmed my heart to have all of you here today involved in discussing the critical issues that are before us and that are so vital to this great country and the entire world. Mr. Clary
